Public servants threaten strike in Fiji

10:14 am on 4 November 2004

Thousands of public servants in Fiji are almost certain to take strike action following a breakdown in talks over pay and other allowances.

The Confederation of Public Sector Unions is claiming a five per cent Cost of Living Adjustment and 15 per cent increase in work related allowances for this year.

But the government has told the unions that there will be no Cost of Living or other payments.

The chief executive of the Public Service commission has told the unions there is no point in further talks unless a cabinet subcommittee on pay changes its stand.

The chairman of the Confederation of Public Sector Unions, Rajeshwar Singh, says their members' claims are legitimate and unions are committed to seeing that justice is done.

Public servants are voting overwhelmingly for strike action with the final count expected to be known later today.
