French court finds serious irregularities in May elections in French Polynesia

A court in Paris has found serious irregularities in the elections in French Polynesia earlier this year for part of the area of Tahiti and Moorea.

Recommendations from the Conseil d'Etats say the result of the vote for the Assembly should be annuled and new elections be held within three months.

The only person who can order territory-wide elections is the French President, Jacques Chirac.

Tahiti and Moorea contain the majority of the population of French Polynesia
