Remengesau confirmed as Palau president

Final results in Palau confirm that the incumbent president, Tommy Remengesau, has scored a resounding victory over his opponent, Polycarp Basilius.

Maria Decherong from the Electoral Commission says Mr Remengesau retained his position with double the votes of Mr Basilius.

"Tommy Remengesau Jnr got 6,494. The opponent, 3,268. So Tommy Remengesau was re-elected for another four years."

Meanwhile the vice president Sandra Pierantozzi, who conceded a week ago, suffered a very heavy loss.

The Commission says Ms Pierantozzi got 2,812 votes while Camsek Chin received 6,919.

The electoral commission will certify the final election results and officially declare the winning candidates tomorrow.

The electoral commission says there will be no recounts.
