A Fiji newspaper has named the minister for information, Simione Kaitani, as being one of the public figures whose coup investigation files have been sent to the director of public prosecutions.

The Fiji Sun says Mr Kaitani did not respond to telephone calls yesterday but police confirmed that his name was among those highlighted in the five files sent to the DPP.

The police spokesman, Assistant Superintendent Kolinio Vunaki, has confirmed that Mr Kaitani is under investigation for secretly taking an illegal oath to join George Speight's failed administration during the coup.

Mr Vunaki says police are waiting for a directive from the DPP on how to further investigations, of such public figures.

The latest progress was made possible after two New Zealand handwriting experts studied the signatures on the secret oath documents and matched them with the suspects' handwriting.

The commissioner of police, Andrew Hughes, personally interviewed Mr Kaitani about two weeks ago.
