New Zealanders in Papua New Guinea have been advised to exercise a high level of personal security and vigilance at all times while travelling in the country.
The travel advisory on the New Zealand Foreign Affairs website says there are fears of terrorism.
It says given terrorist attacks in South East Asia, the proximity of PNG to that region, and current circumstances, the possibility of terrorist attacks cannot be excluded.
It also says the law and order situation remains poor in the Mt Hagen and the Highlands provinces and in the cities of Port Moresby and Lae.
The notice continues, saying sporadic outbreaks of tribal fighting are a normal occurrence in the Highlands provinces and travel in those areas should be avoided.
The ministry has advised visitors not to walk alone and drivers are urged to take extreme caution when travelling because violent incidents continue to occur without warning in Port Moresby.
It says there's been an increase in car hijackings this year, involving shooting.
