American Samoa politician claims civil rights violation

2:59 pm on 23 November 2004

American Samoa's defeated candidate for Governor, Afoa Moega Lutu, says it is evident that some village councils dictated how individuals in their villages should vote.

Afoa says this occurred in some villages mainly in the Eastern district where village chiefs ordered the residents to support the administration of Governor Togiola Tulafono and Lt Governor Ipulasi Aitofele Sunia.

Afoa says the village councils exceeded their authority.

"This is to me a clear violation of civil rights, of individual rights and especially the right to vote, the freedom to choose the candidate of their choice."
