4:41 pm on 23 November 2004

Members of the Fiji Mine Workers Union are reported to want a share of the profits being made by the Emperor Gold Mining Company because of the high world gold prices.

The union general secretary, Satish Chandra, has told the Fiji Sun that it is time the company shares its profits with the workers because of the very high gold prices.

Gold is now fetching 450-US dollars an ounce, which is almost 800 Fiji dollars.

Mr Chandra says the company has given some bonus payments during the year but insists the it has to offer more because of the gold price.
