Reports from Papua New Guinea say more than 9-thousand people will be evacuated from an erupting volcano on Manam island.

Experts say the chance of a major explosive eruption on the island in Madang province, remains high.

The Reuters news agency is quoting a scientist at the Rabaul observatory, Herman Patia, as saying, tremors are still being recorded continuously.

The Post Courier newspaper says a mass evacuation of Manam will start today, taking villagers on a barge to the mainland.
