Paris postpones French Polynesia crisis meeting

6:09 am on 27 November 2004

The French minister for overseas territories has postponed a meeting she had been due to host, between the two would-be presidents of French Polynesia.

Brigitte Girardin says a full meeting in Paris involving the French authorities, together with Gaston Flosse and Oscar Temaru, has been put off until late tonight.

This meeting involving all the protagonists in French Polynesia's ongoing political crisis was due to have been held last night.

Mrs Girardin has been talking with each side in turn since Wednesday.

The talks are aimed at seeing whether fresh general elections throughout the territory are feasible.
