Solomon Islands police say a claim by Amnesty International that police have failed to act on sexual assault cases is not true.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Johnson Siapu says the huge number of sexual assault cases revealed by the recent Amnesty International report has not been seen by his office.

Mr Siapu says if any of the cases had been reported to its police stations, there would be records of them.

However he has assured women or girls who may have been victims of sexual assualt by police officers or militants to report to police and they should have nothing to fear now.

Commissioner Siapu says with the return of law and order, no one including police officers can avoid facing the law if they have done anything unlawful.
