A Kiribati officer with the Participating Police Force in Solomon Islands has undergone surgery after being struck with a dart-like object over the weekend.

The officer was wounded after he stopped a taxi during investigations related to the drinking of Kwaso, an illegal home-brew.

The Acting Police Commissioner, Sandy Piesly, says the officer is expected to make a full recovery in what is believed to be an isolated incident.

Ms Piesly says a youth has been arrested and charged with unlawful wounding for discharging the dart.

"It was a dart-type object that was either thrown or blown through a pipe and as he was getting out of the vehicle this dart-type object pierced his left arm. There was some surgery undertaken and that was because this particular object, the point of it was barbed and as a result of that we were not taking any chances."
