10:24 am on 1 December 2004

In Solomon Islands, people are going to the polls today to elect two new members of parliament.

The people of Ulawa-Ugi constituency will elect a new leader to replace Nathaniel Waena who has been elected Governor General.

The voters of North Malaita will elect a replacement for Daniel Fa'afunua former Minister of Aviation who was jailed more than 6 months ago for assault.

Police say they are confident that security in North Malaita, the stronghold of jailed militant leader Jimmy Rasta, is stable and they do not expect any trouble.
