The Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, is called for delegates at an international kava conference in Suva to do their best to ensure kava can re-enter key overseas markets.
Kava has been banned in a number of Western countries for the past three years after it was linked to liver damage.
Research sanctioned by the Forum is said to show this is not the case and the conference in Suva is aimed at convincing buyers that the product is safe.
Mr Urwin told the conference that the Forum is fully committed to helping remove the bans.
He says, in association with the International Kava Executive Council, the Forum has taken the fight to the highest political levels.
Mr Urwin called for the conference to come up with a set of outcomes which are a combination of scientific understanding, public advocacy and the passion to do the best we can for the people reliant on the industry.
