Cook Islands police expect to know by today whether charges will be laid against the US tuna longlining ship Adelita caught allegedly fishing illegally in the country's economic exclusive zone last week.

Investigations continued yesterday between local authorities and personnel of the Adelita.

Police superintendent Taivero Isamaela says whether charges are laid or not should be finalised by today.

The ship was escorted to Avatiu harbour by the police patrol boat Te Kukupa after being spotted by a New Zealand Air Force Orion, in northern waters of the group.
