Convicted Fiji Senator to appeal life sentence on mutiny charges

8:24 am on 2 December 2004

Jailed Fiji government senator Takiveikata is making a bid to have his life sentence for mutiny related convictions overturned by the Fiji Court of Appeal.

Radio Legend reports that Takiveikata's lawyers will appear before the president of the appeal court, Justice Gordon Ward, to seek Takiveikata's release on bail till the appeal is heard sometime next year.

Prosecution lawyers have confirmed they have been summoned to appear before Justice Ward tomorrow.

Justice Ward is expected to give his decision on the bail application next week.

Meanwhile, Takiveikata's local lawyer, Apaitia Seru, says their appeal will be based on the argument that High Court Judge, Justice Anthony Gates, overturned the verdicts of some of the assessors.

A further ground is based on an alleged comment by Justice Gates at a social function in July this year that he would put Takiveikata away.
