Officials inspect quake devastation in Nabire

2:13 pm on 3 December 2004

Five top government officials have visited the town of Nabire in the Indonesian province of Papua after a series of earthquakes last Friday left 30 people dead and more than a hundred injured.

The officials promised further aid to the quake victims, including medical help.

They say the tremors destroyed hundreds of buildings in the town and left many people homeless.

Doctors there have reported outbreaks of malaria, influenza and diarrhoea among the refugees.

The first and largest of the quakes measured 6.4 on the Richter scale.
