France sends experts to New Caledonia to fight bushfires

2:29 pm on 6 December 2004

Five French fire fighting experts have flown to New Caledonia to help with strategies to combat forest fires.

The five have been sent by the French interior ministry and the ministry of overseas territories.

This comes shortly after ten environmentalist organisations in New Caledonia denounced the indifference towards the massive destruction caused by the fires.

They have issued a statement, saying efforts to contain the fires have been laughable as 20-thousand of hectares have been destroyed in the past two months.

The groups say there should be a fire ban during the dry season because most blazes are caused by people.
