Fiji's Senate meets without Takiveikata

8:05 pm on 7 December 2004

Fiji's senate has begun its last meeting of the year with one of its members unable to attend to attend because he is in prison.

Government senator Ratu Inoke Takiveikata was jailed for life two weeks ago after he was found guilty of inciting and aiding the November 2000 mutiny which claimed eight lives.

Although unable to attend, Takiveikata is collecting his senator's salary in Suva Prison.

Takiveikata's lawyers have applied for his release on bail pending an appeal but the Fiji Court of Appeal president, Justice Gordon Ward, has not given his ruling yet.
