Solomons government puts controls on food imports

11:15 am on 9 December 2004

The Solomon Islands government is to introduce tough controls on food imports next year.

The Director of the Environmental Health Division, Robinson Fugui says under the new measure, all food importers will be required to comply with the provisions of the Pure Food Act 1996.

He says the Act requires persons or businesses intending to import food for sale to notify the Director in writing of the intention.

Mr Fugui says the measure is being taken to curb illegal importation of substandard foods and prevent Solomon Islands being used as a dumping ground for low grade products.

People failing to comply with the new requirements will face severe penalties.
