New internet company set up in Fiji

A company has been set up in Fiji to offer a new wireless, broadband Internet service anywhere in the country from May next year.

Hi Tech Fiji will deliver an Internet connection by selling portable wireless modems which will run for four hours before needing a recharge.

The company's chief executive, John Pollack, says the modem will connect to a laptop or home PC anywhere without the need for a wire connection.

Hi Tech is working with radio station operator Communications Fiji Limited to spread the service across the country.

The managing director of Communications Fiji, William Parkinson, says the new service will not compete with Fiji's only Internet service provider as it will provide services not offered by the Telecom-owned Connect Fiji.

The service will bypass Telecom Fiji and link directly with the Southern Cross Cable.
