Papua New Guinea Police have arrested and charged the Madang Governor James Yali for allegedly raping a schoolgirl in October.

The Post Courier reports that he was charged after requests by police for Yali to turn himself in.

Police say alleged victim's mother was also arrested and charged in relation to the matter.

Two other people were charged earlier by police and have appeared on charges of attempting to prevent the course of justice by obstructing police investigations and receiving payments for not taking the rape matter to court.
