Cooks by-election on Manihiki on February 8th

2:18 pm on 20 December 2004

The deputy chief electoral officer in the Cook Islands has announced that the by-election for Manihiki has been set for February the 8th.

The seat was left vacant after the September general election result was petitioned in court by the Cook Islands Party's Henry Puna.

The court ordered a by-election after this month's recount gave both candidates 134 votes.

The former prime minister, Dr Robert Woonton, had won by a four-vote margin.

Both candidates agreed to take the issue back to the people of Manihiki.
