New Caledonia's congress has approved an increase of the minimum wage to 1,230 US dollars a month.

The rise will take effect from the beginning of the next year and will apply to about 16 percent of the territory's wage earners.

The pay will continue to rise by about 50 dollars every year for the next three years.

The congress has also decided to raise family allocations.
