In American Samoa, a new locally-based airline, South Pacific Express Inc, or SPEX, plans to launch flights between American Samoa and Samoa early next year.

The company's 36-passenger seater plane arrives in Pago Pago today.

SPEX plans to begin a scheduled air service between American Samoa and Samoa in the first quarter of the new year.

The airline still has to go through several federal regulatory checks before launching its service.

SPEX will be the second local airline competing with Inter Island Air which provides domestic flights between Tutuila and Manu'a.

The company is also awaiting approval from the Samoan government to fly to Samoa.
