Fiji public servants still have outstanding claims before the government

Public servants in Fiji say there are still outstanding claims before the government that need to be addressed.

Rajeshwar Singh, the head of the Public Service Association or PSA, says the government averted a planned nationwide strike this week by public servants by paying a two percent pay increase just before Christmas.

It also agreed to refer the rest of the 2004 claim, including a five percent cost of living allowance, to arbitration.

But, Mr Singh says there are a raft of claims still outstanding from 2003.

"They have stopped giving increment from 2003 so we think that the government is in breach of its contractual agreement by not paying a merit increase to the employees. We feel that we have got a very, very good case in this regard."
