Calls for regulations on aid appeals in Fiji

4:21 pm on 5 January 2005

Concerns have been raised in Fiji, over the absence of a Government regulatory body to oversee national aid appeals.

The Fiji Live website reports this follows numerous appeals being conducted for the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami that has devastated South east Asia.

The appeal coordinator for Radio Fiji Two, Shammi Lochan says it would be a good idea for Government to look into the appeals for greater transparency.

The tidal waves from the tsunami devastated coastal areas of India, Maldives, Malaysia Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.

The death toll from the tsunami now stands at 150,000 with thousands of people still missing.
