Solomons fishing firms stop dolphin export - report

9:20 am on 6 January 2005

A report from Solomon Islands says a consignment of dolphins were prevented from being exported last month after the fishing industry lobbied against it.

The consignment of dolphins were to have been exported but the three largest fishing companies petitioned the Minister for Fisheries, which prevented the shipment from getting out.

Sources in the fishing industry say tuna products from Solomon Islands that are now well known in Europe for being dolphin-friendly, are being tainted by dolphin exports.

The country's tuna industry is the one of the three largest export earners for Solomon Islands.
