Niue premier to face three challengers this year

4:47 pm on 6 January 2005

A former premier of Niue says the present incumbent faces challenges from up to three other politicians in this year's general election.

Sani Lakatani says the premier Young Vivian stands a good chance of getting re-elected as he's presided over large increases in aid from New Zealand, including a new hospital.

Mr Lakatani says Niue's high commissioner to New Zealand, Hima Takalesi is expected to enter politics, and may challenge for the premiership.

"Well he's probably one of the candidates, if he's put his name forward, to be elected as the premier, and the present deputy premier, Toke Talagi, he's another candidate, and don't forget there's a lady been in there for a while now, Mrs Vivian Jacobsen."
