Fiji MP under investigation over alleged plot to kill army head

10:26 am on 7 January 2005

The Fiji military says it's investigating recent comments by an MP concerning an alleged plan to assassinate the country's army commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Commodore Bainimarama has been quoted in Fiji saying that the MP was overheard discussing an assassination attempt while at a kava-drinking session.

The army spokesman, Captain Neumi Leweni, says the comments were overheard in October or November and the Army investigation began in late November.

"It was actually overheard by one of our people, that that comment was made by the MP and we had followed it up and are trying to get to the bottom of it."

Captain Leweni won't say who the MP is - or whether the army has spoken to him or her yet.
