Sailor dies as US submarine runs aground south of Guam

A sailor has died after a US nuclear submarine ran aground south of Guam in the weekend, injuring several others on board.

23 crew members are being treated for injuries, including broken bones and lacerations.

The US Navy said the nuclear reactor on the USS San Francisco was not damaged during the accident.

The name of the sailor who died is being witheld until the next of kin is notified.

The submarine, which was on its way to Australia before it ran aground, is due to arrive back at its base at Guam today.
