Micronesia wants answers after US nuclear sub crash

Authorities in the Federated States of Micronesia says they want answers from the US navy on how one of its nuclear submarines crashed in its waters.

One crewman aboard the USS San Fransisco was killed when it ran aground in the Federated States of Micronesia's Exclusive Economic Zone at the weekend.

A spokeswoman for the FSM foreign affairs department, Jane Chigiyal, says the US embassy has given the government some hitherto secret details about the investigation.

Ms Chigiyal says the FSM is concerned about any spillage of radioactive material.

"Of course we are concerned about that, but we have been assured that there is no leakage and no environmental damages. This is one of the issues where there are still, you know, investigating, to find out more information."

Ms Chigiyal says the Federated States of Micronesia expects the US military to complete its inquiry ahead of the next joint committee meeting between the two countries, to be held in the first few months of this year.
