The Cook Island's democratic party leader is scrutinising the work of electoral officials on Manahiki, in the run up to the by-election.

Former prime minister, Dr Robert Woonton, vacated the Manihiki seat following a petition by Cook Island party's Henry Puna.

Dr Terepai Maote says he wants "to make sure everything is legal and correctly done" for the upcoming by-election on February 8.

He says he fully supports their party's candidate, local businessman Apii Piho.

Henry Puna has also been nominated by the CIP for the Manahiki seat.
