Fiji government says its response to Cyclone Ami was slow

The Fiji government has admitted that it's been slow to help some of the victims of Cyclone Ami, which devastated Vanua Levu two years ago.

However, a government spokesman says a report in the Sunday Times claiming there are still 600 families waiting for help is misleading.

Mesake Koroi says 500 families were given food rations or building materials in the northern division last year and a further one hundred would receive help this year.

"We take into consideration the need of everybody that has been affected. And government machinery is perhaps slow in getting on, but it doesn't mean that they are not going to be looked after, no."

Mr Koroi says more and more families are seeking assistance but the government will only assist those in genuine need.

He says despite media reports, he's only aware of two cases of families living in makeshift shelters.
