Tens of thousands of people living in a slum in Vanuatu's capital are soon expected to have access to electricity.
The Daily Post newspaper reports French utilities firm Unelco is extending power and water lines through the Black Sand shantytown in Port Vila.
It reports local councillors and custom landowners have agreed with Unelco on the extension.
Len Garae of the Daily Post newspaper says Unelco is setting up projects around the country.
"The French company, which is a global company, has the monopoly now, and they are controlling both water and electricity throughout Port Vila, as well as the second town, Luganville, and now they've moved on to other provinces including Malamba province in Malekula and Tanna."
The Daily Post newspaper says streetlights will be installed in Black Sand, and the electricity will raise living standards and bring in business.
