Forum offer still stands to monitor Tahiti election despite French snub

The Pacific Islands Forum says its offer still stands to send observers to monitor next month's by-election for 37 seats in French Polynesia.

The Forum secretariat in Suva restated the offer after France this month refused to accept a Forum observer mission following the region's biggest botch-up of a general election.

The Forum has been told that it is not appropriate to send monitors given the circumstances surrounding the election.

But the Forum's acting secretary-general, Iosefa Maiava, also says a mission would have been useful.

"Our understanding is that it is the controversy surrounding the elections that is of concern in the event that the electoral observer mission is construed in a wrong way which might have a sort of negative impact on the election."

For the second time in two months, France has also rejected a Forum fact finding mission, saying it should wait until after the election.

The political turmoil of the past year has seen several presidential elections, rival administrations and unprecedented street protests for a fresh general election.
