7:22 am on 20 January 2005

The Pentagon has chosen Admiral William J. Fallon to be the next commander of American forces in the Pacific, based in Hawaii.

As vice chief of naval operations three years ago, Admiral Fallon made the official apology to families of nine Japanese crew killed when their trawler, the Ehime Maru, hit an American submarine near Hawaii.

The United States Pacific Command is currently the headquarters overseeing America's military relief operations for the Asian tsunami disaster.
