China will provide a grant of more than US$600,000 to assist the fight against HIV/Aids in Papua New Guinea.

The National newspaper reports an agreement was signed early this month.

The Chinese ambassador to PNG, Li Zhengjun, says he hopes the grant will help the PNG government in its efforts to check the spread of the disease.

The Chinese government has also deployed a HIV/Aids specialist doctor who will work along with other Chinese doctors at the Port Moresby General Hospital.

A second batch of Chinese doctors has been working at the Hospital since November.

PNG's Health Minister, Melchior Pep, has thanked the Chinese government for its support.
