The largest employment agency recruiting Fiji citizens for employment in Kuwait has begun hiring women.

Radio Fiji reports that applications forms have been given to women who have been inquiring about jobs and three have already left for Kuwait.

An un-named spokesman for Meridian Services is quoted as saying that 1,000 women will be recruited as nurses, caterers, laundry workers and office assistants.

The women will undergo the same vetting process as the men, with Meridian hoping to have 5,000 Fijians in Kuwait in the next three weeks.

Six women are already serving in Iraq as part of the Fiji army contingent which is providing personal security for United Nations staff involved in next weekend's elections.
