Fiji's Justice Ministry blames judiciary for surge in violent crime

Fiji's justice ministry has blamed the judiciary for the dramatic rise in violent crimes in recent months.

The chief executive of the justice ministry, Sakiusa Rabuka, has told Radio Legend that judges have been releasing serious remand prisoners on bail because of overcrowding and poor conditions in prisons.

Mr Rabuka says the courts should look seriously at the types of violent offenders who are granted bail.

He says it seems the courts are only concerned about the rights of individuals who play on the sympathy of judges.

Sakiusa Rabuka says the courts also consider the bigger picture and the rights of the whole community.
