Hawaii leaders issue condolences after Iraq crash

4:21 pm on 28 January 2005

Community leaders in Hawaii have been giving condolences to the families of the 27 locally-based troops killed in yesterday's helicopter crash in Iraq.

The Star-Bulletin newspaper has carried comments from the Senator Daniel Inouye, who lost his right arm fighting in World War Two.

Mr Inouye says he hopes all Americans will express their appreciation in their own way.

The Republican State Senator, Bob Hogue, has described the crash as a horrible tragedy, adding he feels for all the people and their families.

Mr Hogue says the entire Kaneohe Marine base is a vital part of the community.

The Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann says what he calls the sacrifices of the brave warriors won't be forgotten by people in Hawaii.
