Bigger jail needed in one of Solomon Islands smaller provinces

There's been a call for a bigger prison to be built on Makira in Solomon Islands.

Prison officers and police in the provincial capital, Kirakira, say the jail there can not cope with an increasing number of inmates.

The prison is built to cater for eight to ten prisoners but there are currently 20 inmates.

The prison officials say the building is also dilapidated.

They also say the limited capacity is causing court cases to be delayed because of the difficulty accommodating anyone given a custodial sentence.
