Chiefs in one of the main towns on the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville want government authorities and the police to reintroduce checkpoints and look at re-arming the force.
The Post Courier reports that Buka chiefs say security needs to be beefed up at the wharf and airport in a bid to crack down on crime and they want a police post established on Sohano Island.
They voiced their concerns after a German educator, Peter Braun, was stabbed in his Sohano residence last week by an intruder believed to have been under the influence of drugs.
An American boat was robbed last week and a business broken into.
Chiefs are calling for compensation to be paid to the international community following the attack on Mr Braun, who is believed to be leaving the province in March when his term expires.
