PNG oil palm farmers get cheques and apologies after staging a destructive protest

7:42 pm on 1 February 2005

The general manager of an oil palm plantation in Papua New Guinea hopes angry farmers have calmed down after he paid them for their crops.

Growers in Popondetta wrecked vehicles and damaged buildings at the Higaturu Oil Palm company because they hadn't been paid.

Local reports say that police vehicles that were called out to the incident were also damaged.

The company's manager, Roger Marshall, says they sent out 3,500 cheques to the farmers yesterday, and included a letter of apology for the delay.

He says the delay was due to a computer glitch and he believes the matter is now resolved.
