Indonesia's Muslim vice president to attend Papua Bible day

9:22 am on 3 February 2005

Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to attend the 150th anniversary of Bible Evangelism Day in the Indonesian province of Papua on Saturday.

The ceremony, which Papuans hold to mark the day Christianity was brought to the area, will be attended by Mr Kalla, a Muslim, in the provincial capital of Jayapura.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the celebrations, Papua Deputy Governor Constant Karma says.

Two German missionaries, CW Ottow and JG Gessler, first arrived on Mansinam Island, Manokwari, in 1855.
