New Zealand is ready to respond to any request for assistance from the Cook Islands after Cyclone Meena.

The Foreign minister, Phil Goff, says a Hercules C130 is on stand-by and it could be in Rarotonga with relief supplies, as early as tomorrow.

Mr Goff says the High Commission staff are liaising with the Cook Islands' government to obtain initial damage assessments.

He says staff at NZAID, the government's aid agency, have been monitoring the cyclone and defence personnel are on stand-by.
