PNG MP Yama cleared to retake seat

5:54 pm on 7 February 2005

Papua New Guinea's national court has reinstated MP Peter Yama after last year's leadership tribunal decision recommending that he be dismissed from office.

In a review, the court ruled that the tribunal's decision was wrong.

A leadership tribunal was appointed to look into 34 allegations of misconduct against him dating back as far as 1992.

The allegations were later reduced to three due to insufficient evidence.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that Mr Yama is expected to take his seat in parliament when it convenes next week after he pays the fine this week.
