Fiji security dispute resolved

The office of Fiji's Prime Minister says the issue of the possible withdrawal of Laisenia Qarase's security detail has been resolved.

The chief executive, Jioji Kotobalavu, said the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, had threatened to withdraw security unless the issue of his surcharge for overexpenditure was dealt with.

But Mr Kotobalavu says the matter is now resolved:

"Fortunately he has not carried out that threat and as far as the Prime Minister's Office is concerned it is no longer an issue."

Mr Kotobalavu said nothing had been changed regarding the surcharge and that Commodore Bainimarama was being treated in the same way as other heads of department.

An military spokesman said the army had no comment on the issue
