Taiwan president to visit Marshall Islands in May

3:47 pm on 10 February 2005

Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian is expected to visit the Marshall Islands in May, a visit planned to coincide with the 26th anniversary of constitutional government.

In late January, Mr Chen visited two of the five Pacific island countries with which Taiwan has diplomatic ties.

But the Marshall Islands was dropped from the schedule at the request of President Kessai Note, who said his country wasn't ready for the visit.

There is no indication yet if the May visit will include Kiribati and Tuvalu, Taiwan's other diplomatic allies in the Pacific, who were not included in his regional tour last month that included visits to Palau and Solomon Islands.
