PNG police complain about Australian trainer

8:37 am on 12 February 2005

An Australian policeman serving in Papua New Guinea is being investigated for allegedly using offensive language, including the term "cannibals", towards local officers.

PNG officers have made written complaints about the trainer at the Bomana Police College outside Port Moresby.

A spokesman for Australian Assisting Police said the Professional Standards Unit of the Australian Federal Police was investigating the matter.

It's not clear if the officer has been stepped down from duty.

Scores of Australian police officers are being deployed in PNG as part of the Enhanced Cooperation Programme.
