Second tuna cannery in American Samoa cuts production

12:19 pm on 14 February 2005

Slow sales, combined with poor catches, have forced the tuna cannery, Samoa Packing, in American Samoa, to cut back production.

However, instead of shutting down for a full week as Star Kist cannery has done, Samoa Packing is spreading the closures throughout the month.

The company's General Manager, Herman Gebauer, says this is to ensure that employees don't go without pay for one whole week.

He says it appears that U.S. consumers may be turning to other sources of protein.

The cut back affects more than 2-thousand employees.
